The Pony Express Monument
Photo: The Pony Express Monument, Old Town Sacramento, CaliforniaThe buildings that the Pony Express Monument is facing consists of an old Wells Fargo bank, the location of California's 1st Supreme Court, and the westernmost terminal of the legendary Pony Express mail delivery service which ran from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento from 1860 to 1861.
I thought this would be a cool picture to wrap up my little mini-series on Old Sacramento. Despite having too many cars cruising around on this evening, I was in a world of my own when I saw this scene. It is hard to believe that this historic district fell into disrepair and was known as Sacramento's "Skid Row" back in the 1960's. Tourism may aversely affect places like Yosemite Valley, but for places like Old Sacramento, these historic buildings wouldn't exist anymore without the draw of tourism.
P.S.: I would still like to see the pavement ripped out and replaced with dirt along with banning automobile traffic 365 days a year. :-)

I really like the composition and the lighting in this photo. What ISO did you use? And did you use any camera support?
Thanks Sherri. I shot this like I would most landscape photos. A tripod, ISO 100, f16 @ 25 sec, and probably a polarizer to get a longer exposure time in order to blur the car headlights.
I guess I had better blow the dust off of my tripod and start using it more!
yeah I don't love using tripods particularly ones that weigh more than 2 lbs, but for the scenic stuff I almost always use one. It really makes a difference to be able to use a smaller aperture.
Richard,
This is top notch! The polarized sky and lighting should make this very marketable too.

Thanks Leann. Hopefully Wells Fargo feels the same way when it comes to their next ad campaign. :-)
maybe next time I'll be one of those car headlights whizzing by and do a hand-held impressionist blur of the monument.

Heck yes if they know what is good for their image!
yes you should give it a try-that is what cruise control is meant for right?
In the case you decide to apply for a job at Wells Fargo's marketing dept, I'd gladly volunteer to be one of your professional references. :-)
cruise control wouldn't be pretty at Old Town Sac. Might need a Hummer to nudge the other cars off the street...
Come back over Labor Day weekend...
The Roads ARE covered with dirt and NO cars are allowed. Great for Photo Ops!!It's called The Gold Rush Days.
Thanks, yes I am aware of Gold Rush Days, it was mentioned in the previous blog posting. I just wished that they did that more than 2 or 3 days out of the year.
